I’ve been drawing since I was four years old. I would sit in front of our television and draw scenes from old Looney Tunes cartoons. So I guess it was around the age of ten that I realized how much I loved getting lost in my own world creating characters or scenes from my head.
I am a fan of the old masters like Van Gogh, Da Vinci, Monet, Charles Bargue as well as pop culture masters like Dali, and comic book illustrator masters such as Alex Ross, Todd McFarlane, J. Scott Campbell, Rob Liefeld, Jack Kirby and Akira Toriyama.
I work a lot with texture and color. To see something coming out from the canvas is very inviting to me. It makes me feel like a kid that sees something he would love to touch but is too skeptical to reach out and feel. And that is the same emotion I want the viewers of my art to feel. The process of my paintings start out with sculpting the foundation of the painting with molding paste and various “textured” mediums. Then I use a combo of wet-on-wet/glazing application of color. It brings a certain luminosity out of the painting. I tend to work with acrylics because they dry quicker. Many times I find myself exploring and mixing different paint mediums. Crossing over into spray paint and acrylics as well as combining watercolor, ink and acrylic paint.
About LaJon Dwan Miller
My educational background in art stems from a lot of self teaching, “how to” books, studying and copying pages out of books from the old masters or current pop culture and comic book artists. I received my associates degree in 3D character design from Brooks College, Long Beach CA in 2006. I also have had some formal fine art training under Larry Gluck and his method of drawing and painting.
